Expressing dissatisfaction over the law and order situation in Balochistan, Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary has said it was the job of the Frontier Corps (FC) to establish peace in the province.

A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary resumed hearing of the petition filed by the Balochistan Bar Association on the law and order situation and human rights violations in the province.

During the course of hearing, S M Zafar said that physical and psychological attacks were being carried out against the FC. He further said that 415 FC personnel had been killed and over 600 injured in attacks, adding that the paramilitary force was operating under a strict discipline.

Inspector General Frontier Corps (IGFC) Major General Obaidullah Khan informed the bench that only 12% of the 50,000 FC personnel are natives of Balochistan

His lawyer informed the court that there are 21,500 posts of the FC and 24% FC personnel have been deployed to protect security installations in the province and around 16,000 FC personnel are tasked to oversee security.

In his remarks, Chief Justice Iftikhar said that the court’s priority was to establish peace in the peace and ensure recovery of the missing persons. Moreover, he stated that the common perception was that FC personnel detained people and did not inform concerned civilian authorities.

In his view, the FC’s job was to establish peace in the restive province but apparently it failed to do so. No one, including FC, police and Levies forces, feels secure in the region, he added.

Advocate General Balochistan Amanullah Kinrani said the government had a list of the missing persons and there were 78 names on that list.

Upon which, Justice Jawwad S Khawaja remarked that ministers have alleged that there was proof of involvement of a foreign hand in the unrest in the province.

He also raised a question that why the ministers were not providing information pertaining to foreign involvement to the concerned institutions.
