Thomas Dekker is currently enjoying a very good come back to the top level of the sport after facing a doping ban.
The cyclist has secured two future seasons with his existing side Team Garmin-Sharp and now set high goals for himself in coming years.
One area on which the 28-year-old has shown interest to work on is his weight and he is certain to lose a minimum of 4 kilos before entering the next season.
“It is a matter of eating less. Not during the race, but before and after. Only cycling is not enough, because even after three weeks of the Vuelta [a Espana], I only lost 900 grams,” he cited.
His first international appearance was with Team Rabobank back in 2005 and Dekker stayed with the team for a total number of four years.
The Dutch accepted an offer from Team Silence-Lotto in 2009 and moved to Chipotle Development Team in 2011 after finally representing Team Garmin-Barracuda for 2012 season.
Dekker returned to the top level of sport on July 6, 2011 and finished 70th during his first race at Grote Prijs Stad St. Niklaas.
He signed with team Gamin-Cervelo test side, Team Chipotle-Sugar Labs on August 1st and registered his first comeback victory on September 18th.
The cyclist was confirmed as a permanent member of Team Gamin-Barracuda on November 2011 and he rode amongst the American team for the whole of the 2012 season.
Thomas bagged two victories in the current season including a second stage win at the Tour of Qatar and a stage 5 win at the Circuit de la Sarthe.
He is positive for the coming season and is convinced that there is still room to take his performance to the next level in the coming season.
“Show what I wanted to show. And I did not ride as I had in mind. That takes time, and I am convinced that I can still do it,” the 28-year-old told Wielerland Magazine.
However, he said, “I still have a few points to improve. In the short stage races and one-day races I did pretty well this year”.
“But for a Grand Tour, I really need to be lighter. There is still a kilo or four to go”.
It will be interesting to see how Thomas approaches the new season as Team Garmin-Sharp is counting on him to click early on the season.
