Tony Martin of Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step continued his tremendous 2012 form and dominated the second stage of the Tour of Beijing.
The cyclist is enjoying a superb form and has filled his bag with several top performances in the season including the National Time Trial, World Time Trial and World Team Time Trial Championships.
He finished second overall at the Volta ao Algarve and claimed the fifth overall position at the Tour of the Basque Country 2012.
The German took a total time of 2 hours, 53 minutes and 5 seconds to secure the top podium position during the stage 2 of the Tour of Beijing 2012.
“In the end, there was a descent with a lot of corners and suddenly there was a gap behind me to the other guys,” Martin said after crossing the finish-line.
“I knew there were only about 20km to the finish at that point, so I decided to try and take my chance”.
“When there’s one guy in front, sometimes everyone behind just looks at each other instead of working together,” he said.
“They don’t know if they should chase or if they should try to save themselves for their own chances later on. I could just go full gas as I’m in really good shape”.
Francesco Gavazzi of Team Astana finished 46 seconds behind at the second position with Eros Capecchi of Team Liquigas-Cannondale, Rinaldo Nocentini of Team AG2R La Mondiale and Tomasz Marczynski of Team Vacansoleil-DCM Pro Cycling securing the next three spots respectively.
Andriy Grivko of Team Astana and Mathias Frank of Team BMC succeeded during the first and the second sprints of the race.
Daniel Martin of Team Garmin-Sharp won the first and the second mountains of the Tour of Beijing while Tom Jelte Slagter of Team Rabobank succeeded during the third and the final climb of the race.
Tom Jelte Slagter of Team Rabobank, Rafal Majka of Team Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank, Moreno Moser of Team Liquigas-Cannondale, Time Wellens of Team Lotto Belisol and Taylor Phinney of Team BMC were the top five young riders on the day.
Tony Martin is now leading the stage 2 classifications with an impressive margin of 50 seconds over Francesco Gavazzi.
