Big names advanced at the Shanghai Rolex Masters 2012, an ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Masters 1000 event held in Shanghai, after displaying superb tennis on Thursday. However, eighth seeded John Isner and sixth seeded Janko Tipsarevic
crashed out from this hard court event taking place from 6th to 14th October.
Top three seeds (Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray) all stole their respective shows after outfoxing their opponents through spectacular display of power tennis.
The Swiss Maestro made an epic comeback from a set down to outmuscle his 13th seeded compatriot, Stanislas Wawrinka, to progress. He found his momentum in the tie-breaker of the second set and then went berserk, eventually pulling out the victory
with a bagel.
Federer was quoted in a courtside interview after conquering his fellow citizen:
“I consider myself a little lucky. I never stopped believing, pushed till the end, then got off to a good start in the third set. Basically that was it. It was a tough match. He was the better player for basically two sets. It’s great finding a way out that
way, that’s for sure.”
Ranked second in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Djokovic needed 68 minutes to overpower Spain’s Feliciano Lopez in straight sets. He was never threatened with any breakpoint and cashed three out of seven break chances to formulate a 6-3,
6-3 success.
The reigning Olympic and US Open champion, Murray eased past the Ukrainian number one, Alexandr Dolgopolov, in straight sets in just under an hour to book a spot in the quarter-finals.
The jubilant Scot stated in a post match press conference:
"I think I did a decent job. It’s very, very different conditions to last week. I just tried to stay solid and not go for the lines too much early on. I tried to keep the ball low. He’s very explosive when the ball’s up around his shoulders. Just tried to
keep the ball low, play solid, and I served well."
The American number one, John Isner, on the other hand was underplayed against Czech Republic’s Radek Stepanek.
Joining Isner is the Serbian number two, Janko Tipsarevic, who was crashed out by the former world number two, Tommy Haas.
