Big names advanced into the third round at the Shanghai Rolex Masters 2012 on Wednesday after displaying spectacular tennis. Top seeded Roger Federer eased past the Taiwanese qualifier, Yen-Hsun Lu, while second seeded Novak Djokovic dumped the Bulgarian
star, Grigor Dimitrov, in straight sets to progress at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters 1000 event held in Shanghai, People’s Republic of China.
World number one, Federer needed one hour and 20 minutes to triumph over his opponent. He required a single break of serve in each set to formulate a 6-3, 7-5 victory.
Federer was quoted in a post match press conference:
“I’m happy that things worked out well today because I thought Lu played a pretty good match. He’s got the game to be really dangerous, particularly on a fast court like today. I was able to manage. That was a good thing too me, so I’m really happy. He
played inspiring tennis at times. It was a good atmosphere and a nice match to play."
The 17-time Grand Slam champion will square off against his 13th seeded compatriot, Stanislas Wawrinka, who dumped Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin in a three-set thriller to set up this epic encounter.
Ranked second in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Djokovic will accompany Federer in the proceeding round. He fired five aces and swiped his entire serves without facing any barrier. The Serb cashed in three out of five break chances and
manipulated a 6-3, 6-2 success.
Djokovic stated in a courtside interview:
"Very pleased with my serving in Beijing and obviously the first match today. So that’s something that I’ve been working on, obviously. Relying on the serve in today’s tennis is a big advantage. So I try to get as many free points as possible. Today that
was the case. It helped me a lot to defeat my opponent.”
