Take a break, Moin Khan tells Shahid Afridi
Saturday, October 13th, 2012 2:09:59 by Rana Nasir GhafoorFormer Pakistan skipper Moin Khan has advised Shahid Afridi to take a break from international cricket. The experienced all-rounder is currently going through a lean patch, and it prompted Moin to ask him to take a break from the game.
Despite asking Afridi not to continue playing international cricket, the former wicket-keeper batsman disagreed with the suggestions that the time has come for the all-rounder to call it a day.
"I don’t think he should retire. I sincerely believe he can still serve Pakistan cricket for a few more years. All he needs to do now is take a break from the game, spend some time with his family and come back before the India tour fresh and confident,"
Moin said.
Afridi’s performance both with the bat and ball was terrible in the recent World T20. In the semi-final encounter against Sri Lanka when the situation was dark for the Green Shirts, the right-hander showed no responsibility, and got out on the very first
ball.
Although he is a popular cricketer among the messes, there is surely a lot of pressure on Afridi, and many are asking him to hang his boots. Moin, however, has an entirely different take on this.
"I don’t agree with this notion. Afridi is clearly short on confidence while batting and this is affecting his overall performance. He needs to take a break and regain his focus because he remains a valuable player for Pakistan," Moin said.
He also put his weight behind Abdur Razzaq, who has been issued a show-cause notice by PCB for making comments against captain Mohammad Hafeez and team management. The all-rounder was ignored for the semi-final encounter, when Sohail Tanvir earned a place
in the playing XI.
"Perhaps what Razzaq said about Hafeez was not appropriate but I think he was frustrated and upset at not being picked for the semifinal and there is no doubt it was injustice not to play him in such a big match," the former skipper shared.
"I think the Board needs to take a lenient view of the incident as a senior player like Razzaq is more frustrated when he sits on the sidelines in a big match knowing he can do a lot for his team."
