Hassan Kamran upsets Sikander Khan in 200m IM – 2012 Punjab Youth Festival

Hassan Kamran of Government College University (GCU) devastated the hopes of University of Central Punjab’s (UCP) Sikander Khan by dominating the playoff of 200m Individual Medley (IM) at the Divisional level of 2012 Punjab Youth Festival on Friday, October
12.

Sikander is among the high-flying Pakistani swimmers, who have been dominating the Senior National Swimming Championships for many years, but failed to match the relentless efforts of his opponent yesterday.

He has the honour of representing Pakistan at six international competitions that includes SAF Games, Asian Age Group, Asian senior, World University Games, FINA World Cup and World Championships.

Unfortunately, what many believed to be a piece of cake for him, turned sour. Sikander was expected to please the crowd with his one man show in the 200m IM, but he failed to match Hassan’s pace in final lap and lost the event.

He dominated the race from the very start, staying considerably ahead of Hassan but the Ravian was unwilling to give up. With his persistent efforts in the short course 200m IM, Hassan overpowered Sikander in the final 50 metres of the race and transpired
on the finishing blockade for a gold medal.

Hassan clocked a time of 2 minutes and 32.45 seconds to secure the title. Not to mention, his effort remained more than a full body length ahead of Sikander, who finished second with an effort of 2 minutes and 34.89 seconds.

The championship acted as a qualification standard for the swimmers to compete at the Provincial level that will take place on October 19, where only one swimmer from each district would be allowed to participate.

Nevertheless, Sikander proved his mettle in the 100m freestyle, where he finished first with the timing of 1 minute and 08.10 seconds. On the other hand, Hassan once again prevailed over his opponents in the 100m backstroke, where he embraced victory in
a comfortable manner by clocking an effort of 1 minute and 14.23 seconds.

Subsequently, Nouman Azeem (UCP) was ruthless in the 100m butterfly, finishing first in a time of 1 minute and 14.64 seconds while Ghous Bilal (UCP) dominated the 100m breaststroke by posting a time of 1 minute and 19.59 seconds.

Hassan, being the only swimmer to clinch two gold medals in the competition, was pronounced the best swimmer. His meticulous effort in the 200m IM would have surely wounded Sikander, who seemed helpless after the race.

In addition, Hassan expressed happiness after spoiling the party of best national swimmer while the session ended after the completion of all planned events.
