World number two, Novak Djokovic from Serbia, warded off five match points to outfox third seeded Andy Murray in a three-set nail-biter at the Shanghai Rolex Masters 2012 on Sunday. He nudged up a 5-7, 7-6(11), 6-3 victory against the British hero to grab
his seventh Masters title at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena in Shanghai, People’s Republic of China.
Seeded second in this event, Djokovic unveiled his true colours despite making a sloppy start. He drew the first blood after breaking Murray’s opening serve but lost his track afterwards. Despite exchanging his serve three times, the Serb lost his serve
again in the 11th game, eventually suffering a 5-7 loss.
The Belgrade native lost his serve early in the second set and faced a match point at 3-5. However, he impressively fought back and not only warded off four more championship points in it but pulled out the equaliser with a 7-6(11) win.
In the final set, Djokovic’s skills were fully polished. He was never threatened with any breakpoint and cashed two out of five break opportunities to clinch the decider with a 6-3 score line.
The Serbian number one was quoted in a post match press conference:
"It’s difficult to judge who was better because it was so close throughout the whole match. We had so many rallies in three and a half hours; for a best-of-three set match it is a very long time. Could have easily gone the other way. He was five match points
up. When I faced those match points, I tried to focus on each individually. He was so close to the victory that I cannot say I was the better player."
