Hollywood’s heavyweight Angelina Jolie pays tribute to Malala Yousafzai
Wednesday, October 17th, 2012 12:16:41 by Faisal FarooqAngelina Jolie is no stranger to fighting the good fight and now, the United Nations Goodwill Ambassador has turned her attention to Malala Yousafzai, writing an opinion piece in defense of the 14-year-old Pakistani girl’s struggle for educational equality.
Her write up appeared at Daily Beast, underscoring the plight young Pakistani peace activist, framed by her children’s reactions to the teen’s attempted murder by the Taliban.
The Hollywood heavyweight noted, “I felt compelled to share Malala’s story with my children. It was difficult for them to comprehend a world where men would try to kill a child whose only ‘crime’ was the desire that she and others like her be allowed to go to school.”
She further stated, “Our 8-year-old suggested that the world build a statue for Malala, and fittingly create a reading nook near it. Our 6-year-old asked the practical question of whether Malala had any pets, and if so, who would take care of them? She also asked about Malala’s parents and if they were crying.”
She wrote her daughter Zahara suggested the injured Pakistani teen should be honored with a statue, while Shiloh, 6, asked mom who was looking after Malala’s pets while she was in hospital.
Jolie further stated, “Shiloh also asked about Malala’s parents and if they were crying. We decided that they were, but not only for their daughter, also for children around the world denied this basic human right.”
Concluding her piece, the actress urged schoolchildren and parents to join her and donate funds to the Women in the World Foundation as a tribute to brave Yousafzai. The charity seeks to provide funds to women and girls fighting for girls’ education in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Malala was shot in the head by Taliban for her courageous and brave remarks against atrocities of militants and in favor of girls education in the area.
She has been blogging for the BBC since 2011, writing about her daily life fighting to end inequality in Pakistan.
Malala is undergoing treatment in the UK after insurgents shot her in the head for her advocacy of equal-opportunity education. She is said to be making a “good recovery”.
