Veterans stole the show at the BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg Open, a WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International-level tournament held in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg. The top seed, Roberta Vinci, on the other hand became casualty of the day.
Former world number one, Venus Williams, stunned top seeded Vinci in straight sets in one hour and 44 minutes. She was broken three times but cashed four out of nine break chances, eventually sealing the deal with a 7-6(2), 6-4 win.
Williams commented in a courtside interview after inching towards her maiden title this circuit:
"It was definitely well-contested today – every time I had a break, she would play unbelievable against my serve in the next game. We fought for every point. We ran so much. And it’s great to come out on top against a player who has had such a great year,
not only in singles but also in doubles."
The former world number nine, Andrea Petkovic, followed steps of the American icon. She nudged up a 6-3, 6-2 victory against the Kazakhstani contender, Ksenia Pervak, in one hour and 18 minutes.
The German star, who is currently ranked 182nd in the WTA Premier Rankings, dropped her serve twice but availed five out of eight break chances to inch closer towards her third career title.
The former world number five, Daniela Hantuchova, also recreated her old magic at this indoor hard court event. She devastated the Spanish challenger, Lourdes Dominguez Lino, with a bagel in on one hour and 36 minutes to secure a spot in the semi-finals.
"I was rushing, so I just had to calm down," Hantuchova reflected. "Our last match in Fed Cup I think we played three hours, so I expected a tough match today, and it was. Even though the second set was 6-0, I really had to fight for it."
Monica Niculescu of Romania rounded up the final four. She jolted down the Czech contender, Lucie Hradecka, with a bagel and took lead in their head-to-head series by 3-2.
