Queen Elizabeth Hospital releases recent photo of Malala Yousafzai
Saturday, October 20th, 2012 2:10:24 by Faisal FarooqQueen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham on Friday released a recent picture of Malala Yousafzai, showing her in consciousness.
According to doctors, Malala would like to thank well-wishers and the doctors at the hospital, reports quoted a spokesperson for University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust as saying.
She is also communicating by writing notes, said Doctor Dave Rosser, the medical director at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, central England. Malala was attacked on her school bus in Swat valley on October 9.
According to the hospital sources, she is not on a ventilator and she has had a tracheotomy and is breathing through the tube in her neck.
The medical head of the hospital added that Malala’s infection was still a cause of concern.
In the current situation, she can’t talk because of tube in throat but can communicate through writing.
However, she is aware of surroundings but understandably gets tired very easily.
The press briefing further said that the impact of brain injury is not been able to do full evaluation because brain is still swollen.
She has movement of her arms and legs and she also stood with assistance from nurses, it added.
The briefing added, “We need to get her strong enough to do reconstructive surgery. The skull bone will need to be replaced either with her bone or with a titanium plate.”
It further stated that surgery weeks to months down the line and this is a fluid situation and she sustained a very, very grave injury.
She’s not out of the woods yet, but we are hopeful she will make a good recovery.

Following the media briefing by Dr Rosser, consent was obtained to take and release photographs of Malala.
