Malala Yousafzai comes out of her coma: Doctors
Saturday, October 20th, 2012 1:06:03 by Faisal FarooqMalala Yousufzai, the girl who was shot in the head by Taliban, has come out of her coma and is making efforts to stand for the first time since the gunfire.
According to the reports, Malala is now out of danger. A BBC report quoting sources said that the young peace activist stood for first time.
She is also communicating by writing notes, said Doctor Dave Rosser, the medical director at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, central England, where the teenager was taken to from Pakistan on Monday.
Dr. Rosser said, “The girl is well enough that she’s agreed that she’s happy, in fact keen, for us to share more clinical detail.”
Rosser said the infection is probably related to the track of a bullet which grazed her head when she was attacked by Taliban gunmen. Because of the infection, Rosser said, “she is not out of the woods yet.”
The latest progress report — more detailed than previous updates — suggests that the schoolgirl shot after she defied the Taliban by insisting on the right of girls to go to school could make a good recovery.
There “is certainly physical damage to the brain” from the bullet that entered Malala’s head, he said, but she appears to be functioning well intellectually and has the motor control to stand.
“Whether there are any subtle intellectual or memory deficits down the line, it’s too early to say,” he said.
She is being treated for signs of infection probably related to the path the bullet took through her body, from above her left eye, through her jaw and down to her shoulder, he said.
The 14-year-old child activist was injured when she was shot in the head by Taliban and is currently under treatment at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. Doctors had earlier said that Malala’s condition was stable and she was comfortable.
A team of doctors from both Queen Elizabeth and Birmingham Children’s Hospital are looking after her. People the world over prayed for Malala’s recovery.
Interior Minister Rehman Malik had also announced that the Sitara-e-Shujaat will be awarded to 14-year-old Malala.
