Italian number one Sara Errani overpowered the former US Open champion, Samantha Stosur, in a topsy-turvy three setter at the TEB BNP Paribas WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Championships 2012 on Thursday. She nudged up a 6-3, 2-6, 6-0 victory against the
ninth seed to secure a place in the semi-finals at this year-end championships taking place in Istanbul, Turkey.
Seeded seventh in this event, Errani displayed exceptional skills to outdo the Australian veteran in one hour and 50 minutes. After recording this victory, she not only lowered trail in the head-to-head series by 2-5 against Stosur but also progressed into
the semi-finals at this prestigious hard court event.
"In the beginning she was making a lot of unforced errors, but in the second set she was playing amazing," the booming Italian said afterwards. "I was just trying to stay focused and aggressive today and I think the third set was better for me."
Errani made quick in-roads at the Sinan Erdem Dome. She drew the first blood and took the initial lead. She lost her lead in the very next game but wiped out the last four games to seal the opener with a 6-3 win.
The Australian top lost her opening serve after breaking her rival’s serve in the first game. However, she went berserk and reeled off following four games, eventually pulling out the equaliser with a 6-2 score line.
The match was poised on a knife edge and the Italian star went out of control. She stroke out all six games and clinched the decider with a bagel.
Stosur reflected after her loss.
"I really wanted to try and play a good match tonight and be at least one match up, but obviously the result wasn’t quite that way. It was a little bit up and down – in the second set I got off to a good lead and then was able to hold onto that and win the
set, and then I had a break point in the first game of the third and missed a return, and then it was like all the energy went out of me.”
