Former world number one, Serena Williams from United Stated, got the better of the current world number one, Victoria Azarenka, in straight sets at the TEB BNP Paribas WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Championships held in Istanbul, Turkey. She jolted down
a 6-4, 6-4 victory against the Belarusian star to improve to a 3-0 record in the red group.
The American icon maintained her intensity from her victory at the US Open title-round against Azarenka and ultimately sealed the deal in one hour and 35 minutes. She improved to an 11-1 head-to-head record against the top seed and extended her winning streak.
Williams was quoted after the match in her on-court interview:
"I’d been struggling with my serve in my first two rounds – I knew I could do better, so that was keeping me going. And everything was just a little better today. I knew I needed to play better today to win against Victoria, who has had a stellar year. I’ll
probably have to play her again though – I can feel it. And on the 3-0 second set hole? I just hung in there. I was down two breaks but managed to stay pretty calm then, and throughout the whole match as well. I wasn’t as emotional as I was in the first two
rounds!"
The 31-year-old drew the first blood in the eighth game and took a 5-3 lead. Despite squandering her chance of serving out the set, she broke her rival’s serve again and pulled out the opener with a 6-4 score line.
Ranked third in the world, Williams lost her track towards the following set. She gifted her opening two serves and went 0-3 down. However, the veteran made a stunning reply and eventually carved out the victory with a 6-4 score line.
