Up to 30 percent still live below the poverty line in Pakistan (Part Two)
Monday, October 29th, 2012 3:04:36 by Faisal FarooqApparently, the reason for not making public the poverty data is that the country’s abject poverty stood at 24 per cent when the last such report came in 2007-08 and nine per cent more people were pushed below the
poverty line during the period the Pakistan People’s Party has been in power.
A district-wise study was undertaken to compile the report which that 20 districts in the whole country have an acute poverty incidence. Of these 16 districts are located in the province of Balochistan and four in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Balochistan is the poorest of the provinces with 52 per cent population living below poverty line, followed by Sindh with 33 per cent, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 32 per cent and Punjab with 19 per cent.
The report has not spelled out causes for this alarming state of affairs but it is no secret that unequal distribution of the national wealth is the premier reason and mounting corruption and total absence of rule of law are the contributory factors.
By all means, the situation points out to the criminal conduct of the few individuals who have amassed billions while an overwhelming majority of the people is deprived of even clean drinking water.
Pakistan’s dilemma is that there seems no light at the end of a long and dark tunnel because all political parties seek a status quo and are abetting in the crime of the ruling elite of the landed aristocracy and comparator bourgeois.
Only a revolution is the answer but that does not seem to be taking place even in the distant future. Practically Pakistanis are doomed to continue groping in the dark.
The primary reason is the lack of proper, meaningful and non-discriminatory representation for all regions in decision-making.
