Indian Women thrash Pakistan to lift T20 Asia Cup
Wednesday, October 31st, 2012 3:44:42 by Faisal FarooqAfter overcoming arch-rivals Pakistan by 18 runs in a low-scoring final, the Indian women’s cricket team on Wednesday lifted the inaugural Asian Cricket Council’s Twenty20 Asia Cup.
After winning the toss and choosing to bat, India posted a total of just 81 runs all out in the allotted 20 overs, with only Poonam Raut, acting captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Reema Malhotra getting into double figures.
Sana Mir was the pick of Pakistan’s bowlers in the final, which took place in Guangzhou, southern China. Mir, Pakistan’s captain, took four wickets for just 13 runs in her four overs.
However, the Indian bowlers in response did a splendid job to dismiss Pakistan to 63 in 19.1 overs.
Pakistan, after an initial jolt in the form of Qanita Jalil (2), tried to build their innings on the back of Bismah Maroof (18) and skipper Sana Mir’s (11) stand of 27 runs.
But with both the batters falling within a span of one over things never looked the same for Pakistan as they kept on losing the wickets on regular intervals.
The team lost nine wickets for the addition of just 32 runs to hand India a comfortable 18-run win.
In addition to India and Pakistan, the Asia Cup featured women’s teams from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, China, Nepal, Thailand and Hong Kong.
The player of the tournament was Bismah Maroof of Pakistan. In the final, Maroof took two wickets for 14 runs and then top scored for Pakistan with an innings of 18.
India’s Raut was named player of the match, thanks to her innings of 25 runs and some match-winning fielding that included a catch and a run out.
The title helped the Indian women’s team exact some revenge after losing to Pakistan in the Women’s World T20 tournament in Sri Lanka at the start of October in what was another low-scoring match.
Neither team progressed very far in that tournament, which was dominated by England and Australia. But it was a different story in this competition.
