No frontline spinner in warm-up game a good strategy: Suresh Raina
Thursday, November 1st, 2012 2:13:19 by Rana Nasir GhafoorIndia A played with no frontline spinner in the warm-up match against England, giving the tourists no chance to adjust to the spinning conditions. Many cricket pundits have criticised this move, and declared it against spirit of the game.
However, India A skipper Suresh Raina has an entirely different take on this, as he defended his team’s combination against the Poms. He uttered that he and Yuvraj Singh, both part-time slow bowlers, have bowled really well against the Englishmen.
"We bowled really well, (Ashok) Dinda, myself and Yuvraj (Singh). Me and Yuvraj bowled 40 overs and got two and one wickets. Manoj Tiwary also bowled well," said Raina.
The Indian left-hander, who is fighting for the number six slot in the national team with Yuvraj Singh, also praised Alastair Cook for his wonderful show with the bat. Riding on the captain’s unbeaten 112, England reached 286 for 4 in reply to India A’s
369 in the first innings.
"He (Cook) is looking solid. He will definitely score a lot of runs this season. He has been batting really well since last two, two-and-a-half years. I wish him luck. Hopefully, he will not do well against India," he said.
On Yuvraj dismissing Kevin Pietersen, he uttered, "He has had a few successes against KP. He was very happy (with the dismissal). They both had a laugh later. All England players know to play spin because of IPL."
On the other hand, England all-rounder Samit Patel is not sure about his place in the first Test, despite a marvellous show with the bat in the practice game. He explained:
"There are a few more practice games to go and a lot of work left to do. The more I play, the confidence will go up. It’s about trying to adapt quickly to the conditions in India, both with the bat and ball."
On his partner Cook, he described, "He was just brilliant. To bat all day is a great effort.”
The opening Test between India and England is due to be played at Ahmedabad from November 15th to November 19th.
