Olympic gold medallist, Andy Murray from Great Britain, suffered a shocking defeat against the Polish qualifier, Jerzy Janowicz, in the third round at the BNP Paribas Masters 2012, an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event held in Paris Bercy. The French number
one, Jo Wilfried Tsonga, on the other hand powered into the quarter-finals after overpowering 11th seeded Nicolas Almagro.
Seeded third in this event, Murray made quick in-roads at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy. However, the British number one lost his path in the following set tie-breaker and equalised the set scores.
In the final set, the Dunblane native failed to find his rhythm and eventually endured a 7-5, 6-7(4), 2-6 loss against the world number 69 in two hours and 25 minutes.
"He played aggressive. He moves pretty good, serves very well. He’s unpredictable," said the 25-year-old, who was heading to London within hours. When you’re on your serve (with a match point) you must close the match."
Janowicz on the other hand set up a date with eighth seeded Janko Tipsarevic in the quarter-finals.
The sixth seed, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga from France, saw a better fate later that day. He failed to seek any break opportunity but outshined the Spanish star in both sets’ tie-breaker, eventually formulating a 7-6(4), 7-6(3) score line in one hour and 45 minutes.
Tsonga was quoted in a courtside interview after overpowering the Spanish number three:
"What I liked about this match is that I felt I was really eager to do well and I was fighting a lot, like a tiger. I don’t believe I played very well tonight. The good thing is that I’m fighting and I’m eager to play well. Sometimes you start struggling,
and then after you play better and better. I hope the next match will be even better than this one."
