Fifth seeded Tomas Berdych was crashed out by the local contender, Gilles Simon, at the BNP Paribas Masters 2012, an ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters 1000 event taking place in Paris Bercy, France. On the other hand, the Polish qualifier
Jerzy Janowicz extended his dream run after upsetting another seed, Janko Tipsarevic, on Friday.
The Czech number one cashed one out of 10 break chances. However, he only brushed off four out of seven breakpoints he came across, ultimately suffering a 4-6, 4-6 loss in one hour and 51 minutes.
The Nice native, Simon jubilantly stated in a courtside interview after recording this upset victory:
"I’m happy to play well here this year, because when I was young I grew up nearby and I came to see this tournament. It’s a very special tournament to me. I always wanted to do well here. Until today, I always played awfully bad when I came here, so I’m
trying to enjoy this year in Paris."
The world number 20, Simon will lock horns with Janowicz, the man who stunned the Olympic gold medallist Andy Murray in the third round.
The Polish booming star, Janowicz, carried his rhythm, in his quarter-final battle against eighth seeded Janko Tipsarevic. The 21-year-old made a drastic entry at the Palais Omnisports. He failed to block the lone breakpoint he came across and lost the opener.
However, Janowicz made a stunning reply and pulled out the equaliser with a breadstick.
He was leading 4-1 with two breaks of serve in the deciding set when Tipsarevic was forced to retire with illness, subsequently rewarding a semi-final spot to Janowicz.
The beaming Pole was quoted in a post match press conference:
"In the second and third set I just played the best tennis of my life. I didn’t know actually I can play that good. It’s really not easy for me to realise what is going on in my life right now. Right now I’m playing the best tennis of my life, and I hope
tomorrow I can play even better.”
