Urging strict measures to bring peace back, the Supreme Court on Saturday ordered the Sindh government to take strict action against all armed groups in Karachi, including Taliban, target killers and criminals.

A five-member larger bench of the apex court headed by Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali resumed the hearing of the case regarding implementation of its ruling over Karachi law-and-order.

In its interim order, the apex court was of the view that reports of presence of armed groups including Taliban should be seen seriously, asking the government to arrest 35 criminals released on parole by the interior ministry.

The order, which constitutes eight pages, says that the provincial government should take the issue of the presence of the Taliban in Karachi seriously.

The bench, in its order, stated that the police and other law enforcement agencies had failed in providing security to the citizens. The bench directed the government to implement its directives within three months’ time.

It further directed the Sindh government to take immediate steps to protect the citizens against targeted killings. Moreover, the court also ordered that all arms licenses should be computerised.

Regarding performance of Rangers present in the metropolis, Rangers was ordered not to just arrest the culprits but should be a part of legal process to ensure justice to be done.

Similarly Rangers were asked to handover armed people, arrested by Rangers, to police immediately.

During today’s hearing, Director General Rangers Major General Rizwan Akhtar, Inspector General (IG) Sindh Police Fayyaz Leghari and Chief Secretary Raja Muhammad Abbas also appeared before the bench.

Earlier, the court asked the AG to inform the court as to how the provincial government has planned curbing violence in the city. “Score of today’s killings in six,” the AG replied.

Justice Usmani expressed resentment over his reply and remarked “is loss of people’s life is mere scoring? Is it a matter of sixes and fours?”

At the onset of the hearing, the bench expressed displeasure over all high-ranking police officers’ presence in the court, ordering the SHOs to go to their respective areas. The bench observed that the police had been failed to safeguard the citizens.
