Former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, was edged out by second seeded Nadia Petrova in the final showdown at the Qatar Airways Tournament of Champions 2012. Elsewhere, the world number five David Ferrer halted the Polish qualifier Jerzy Janowicz in
straight sets to claim his maiden Masters title at the BNP Paribas Masters 2012 on Sunday.
Seeded top at the season-ending event held in Sofia, Wozniacki squandered her both break opportunities. On the hand, she only warded off three out of eight breakpoints she faced, eventually suffering a 2-6, 1-6 loss in one hour and 27 minutes.
Wozniacki reflected about her loss in a courtside interview after
"Nadia played very well. Her service games were tough, and in the rallies I tried to push her back and make her move, but it just didn’t go my way. In the first set I felt like we had a lot of close games, but in the second set I was forcing myself too much
and made too many unforced errors. I would have loved to win today, but I didn’t, and I’ve had a good week."
The 22-year-old is happy with how the season ended despite her loss. She cracked back into the Top 10 and won 18 of her last 21 matches since exiting from the opening round at the US Open.
Seeded fourth at the Palais Omnisports de Paris Bercy, David Ferrer on the other hand stole the show. He crushed the Polish qualifier in straight sets in almost one and a half hour.
The Spanish number two was quoted in a post match press conference:
"It was a dream for me to win here in Paris-Bercy. I had never won a Masters 1000 [title], and I took my chance, because it was not Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer or Novak Djokovic.”
Ferrer became the first person outside the top four to capture a Masters crown since Robin Soderling conquered Gael Monfils in Paris two years ago.
