Dinda, Tiwary should have been selected: Sourav Ganguly
Tuesday, November 6th, 2012 3:19:53 by Rana Nasir GhafoorFormer Indian captain, Sourav Ganguly has expressed serious disappointment over the selectors’ decision to not pick pacer Ashok Dinda and middle-order batsman Manoj Tiwary for the opening two Tests against England.
He added that had he been the selector, he would have picked both players. In spite of hitting an excellent innings of 93 in the practice against the Poms, Tiwary found no favour from the selection committee, headed by Sandeep Patil.
On the other hand, Dinda, who was the highest wicket-taker in last year’s domestic season, also failed to get a call from the selectors. Ganguly, who will be covering the series as commentator, is really disappointed over the selectors’ move.
"It is disappointing to find Dinda and Tiwary are not in the squad. Dinda’s selection was important. No player in the country is more deserving than Tiwary and Dinda," said Ganguly.
"They have always performed well whenever they got the opportunity. But neither of them know when they will get the next chance in spite of doing well," he added.
The former skipper described that pacers these days have very short career, and they should be given proper chances. Talking about Ishant Sharma, he explained that the right-arm paceman is talented, but has not yet performed to the expectations.
"Ishant Sharma has been given a lot of opportunities but has not performed as desired. Dinda was the highest wicket taker last year in the domestic season and has started off well this season. It is disappointing to say the least," said the southpaw.
"Had I been a selector I would have always played Manoj in all the formats of the game. He is a fine batsman, can bowl and field well. I would have surely picked Dinda and Tiwary in my team," added the former skipper.
"It is really hard on my part to say that he was chosen because he plays for CSK. He has been selected probably as a replacement for Sehwag who earlier had sustained a thumb injury," said Ganguly.
On the other hand, Tiwary took the disappointment positively, and uttered that players do face such things in professional career. Setting sights on the next Ranji Trophy, he stated:
"These are part and parcel of professional life and you have to take them in your stride. I am taking this positively. My next aim is to do well in Ranji Trophy."
