World number one Novak Djokovic and the Olympic gold medallist Andy Murray both conquered their respective opponents at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, the most important event after the four Grand Slams. The Serb overpowered seventh seeded Jo-Wilfried
Tsonga while Murray bounced back to outmuscle the Czech number one Tomas Berdych
Djokovic, who reclaimed his top rank this week when Roger Federer withdrew from the BNP Paribas Masters, assertively entered the O2 Arena. He notched up a 7-6(4), 6-3 victory on one hour and 40 minutes.
The Serbian ace dusted away all three breakpoints he came across to keep his entire serves and pro long the set to a tie-breaker. He cruised to a 4-1 lead in it before bagging the opener with a 7-6(4) win.
The 25-year-old jumped to a 2-0 lead in the following set. He maintained his intensity and eventually sealed the set by winning six games to three.
Murray, who ended 76-year British Grand Slam drought, made a drastic entry at the O2 Arena. However, with the support from his home crowd the scot found his rhythm and eventually sealed the deal with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 score line in two hours and 16 minutes.
Murray beamed in a courtside interview after stealing the show:
“The noise and the atmosphere at the beginning of the match was great. I thought I started the match well. I just didn’t quite take my chances early on. Both of us I thought served pretty well [and] weren’t losing too many points on our first serve. It can
hinge on a couple points here or there. [Getting the break for a 3-1 lead] gave me the advantage in the second set. But the third set was tight as well.”
Murray will face off the Serbian number one on Wednesday in Group A.
