In his first speech after his re-election, President Barack Obama on Wednesday said the best of the United States is yet to come, offering thanks to the American people who have elected themselves up for the second term.

Barack Obama delivered a victory speech to his supporters after being projected the winner of the presidential election over Republican nominee Mitt Romney. He said he’ll work with Romney to improve country.

Obama quickly touched on themes of reconciliation, saying “we are an American family and we rise together as one nation and one people.

He observed, “I want to meet with Republican rival Mitt Romney to discuss how they can work together. They may have battled fiercely, but it’s only because we love this country deeply.”

He suggested that they were not as divided as our politics suggest. They were not as cynical as the pundits believe, he added. He went on to thank Vice-president Joe Biden, whom he dubbed ‘America’s happy warrior’.

He said that tonight more than 200 years after a former colony won the right to determine its own destiny, the task of perfecting our union moves forward.

He offered thanks to every American who voted in this election, saying, “Whether you held an Obama sign or a Romney sign, you made your voice heard.”

He also stated, “Whether I earned your vote or not, I have listened to you, I have learned from you, and you made me a better president. The task of perfecting our union moves forward. It moves forward because of you.”

He reiterated that the best of the US is yet to come, adding that they all were an American family, they rise and fall as one nation.

The president said that the US economy was recovering, a decade of war is going to end and a long campaign was now over. He promised to work with bipartisan leaders in months ahead to reduce the deficit, tax code and immigration law.

He opined, “We want our children to live in America where there is no death or poverty. We believe in a generous and tolerant America. I return to the White House more determined and more inspired to work for you.”

The president rolled to a second term over Romney, winning more than 300 electoral votes.

Obama was welcomed by thunderous applause as he arrived on stage in his hometown, joined by first lady Michelle Obama and daughters Sasha and Malia.

Romney said earlier he called Obama to congratulate him on his victory, adding that he prays, “The president will be successful in guiding our nation.”
