Former military ruler Pervez Musharraf sees conspiracy against army
Wednesday, November 14th, 2012 3:24:56 by Web DeskFormer President military chief General (Retd) Pervez Musharraf has said that a conspiracy has been hatched against the army based on the fact, adding that if you want to weaken Pakistan then weaken the army and this is what happening now.
In an interview to BBC, the former military ruler said that he had ordered during his tenure to the intelligence agencies to keep themselves aloof from politics, adding they had decided that secret agencies must not interfere in politics.
Replying to a query about registration of cases and investigations against the military officials, the retired general said that a conspiracy was being hatched against the army based on the fact that if you want to weaken Pakistan then weaken the army and this is what happening now.
Musharraf said US drone strikes mostly killed terrorists in tribal areas adding some from the general public also fallen victim to it, but their number was being exaggerated. He re-iterated that he had no written or verbal agreement with the US regarding the drone strikes and he had been lodging protests on these attacks with US President Bush.
Musharraf said the Asghar Khan case was 15-years-old, and at that time, a ‘different political culture’ existed and there was ‘a totally different environment’ in which these decisions were taken.
He said that opening the old cases was not a good thing and advised forget the past to keep focusing on the present and the future. He, however, said that if the process of purifying is being started, it should be started from the murder of Liquat Ali Khan.
He further stated that this was the reason that the general elections in February 2008 were clean and transparent.
When he was asked about his homecoming, the former commando said that he delayed his plan due to uncertain conditions. He, however, said that he would come back and participate in general elections.
