The third seed, Denis Kudla, suffered a bitter reality but remaining seeds who were in action all progressed into the final eight at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event taking place in Illinois, United States.
The highest ranked contestant at this tournament, Russell, overpowered his wild card compatriot, Devin Britton, in straight sets in one hour and 37 minutes to progress. He dropped his serve four times but cashed six out of 13 break chances to prevail.
The third seed, Kudla, was underplayed against the British contender, Alex Bogdanovic. He suffered a 3-6, 2-6 loss against the 28-year-old in one hour and six minutes. He broke his rival’s serve once but was broke five times, eventually exiting from the tournament with disappointment.
The fourth seed, Ryan Sweeting, needed 68 minutes to steal the limelight against his fellow citizen, Dennis Nevolo. He was never threatened with any breakpoint and cashed three out of eight break chances to formulate a 6-3, 6-2 success.
Seeded sixth in this tournament, Tim Smyczek, also prevailed in his match against South Africa’s Izak Van Der Merwe. He was broken once but cashed half of the eight break chances to formulate a 6-2, 6-4 score line.
The seventh seed, Jack Sock, also enjoyed a similar fate. He lost his serve once but cashed half of the six break opportunities, eventually sealing the match with a 6-4, 7-5 score line in one hour and 25 minutes.
American contender, Rhyne Williams, will accompany seeds in the following round. He struck eight aces and cashed four out of seven break chances to manipulate a 7-5, 6-4 success in almost one and a half hour battle.
