Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhary says fair polls constitutional requirement
Saturday, November 17th, 2012 3:22:09 by Web DeskChief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary on Saturday said that holding of transparent and fair elections was the constitutional requirement, adding that some clarifications have been sought from the ECP before arriving at any decision.
He was heading a meeting of the National Judicial Policy Making Committee (NJPMC). Earlier, the Election Commission had requested to avail services of judicial officers as ROs at the polling stations in upcoming elections.
The Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) request for deputing judicial officers as returning officers for holding fair and transparent upcoming general elections was deliberated in the meeting.
The chief justice was of the opinion that elections should be held in accordance with the law and with utmost honesty. If the election commission calls for help from any organization for the holding of transparent and fair elections, then it required due consideration, he added.
Chief Justice stated when the judiciary was involved in elections in the past, the judicial work was hampered. The decision would be taken on the basis of commission clarifications asked for in this regard, he added, offering thanks that the judiciary succeeded in winning over the confidence of the people.
All the provincial High Courts, Islamabad High Court and Shariat Court’s Chief Justices, Secretaries of the Election Commission and Law and Justice Commission attended this meeting. Secretary Election Commission of Pakistan Ishtiak Ahmed briefed the meeting about the arrangements made for the holding of transparent general elections.
