Today, one of the most famous poets, influential journalists and revolutionary left-wing intellectuals, of sub-continent, Faiz Ahmed Faiz is being remembered on his death anniversary.

One of the most prolific poets of the 20th century‚ Faiz was known to have reached out‚ through his work‚ to the wealthy and to those less fortunate alike. Dubbed the ‘voice of a revolution’‚ he extended an asylum of sorts to the masses in a period where freedom of speech was crushed to a bare minimum.

He hailed from an academic family that was well known in literary circles and his home was often the scene of a gathering of local poets and writers who met to promote the literacy movement.

Faiz was the first Asian poet to be awarded the Lenin Peace Prize, the Soviet Union’s equivalent to the Nobel Prize in 1963. He used traditional meters and rhythms to compose poetry that was a blend of Romanticism and realism. Before his death he was also nominated for the Nobel Prize. Faiz was also listed four times for the Nobel Prize for literature.

Faiz Ahmad Faiz is the voice of the conscience of the suffering humanity of our times. A voice which is a song as well as a challenge, which has a burning faith and cries out against the agony of its era, a constant endeavor and the thunder of the revolution, as well as the sweet recital of love and beauty. This had particularly affected the colonial economy of India.

Faiz is a poet of beauty and love. His message is the reign of beauty and love in the country. The passion for enjoying the beauty of life, his deep attachment to love of self and the agony of the world, his love of humanity, his patriotism, his passion for revolution, his sense of justice, are all metaphors of the agony of love.

He does not agree with the doctrine of art for art’s sake, or of existentialism that artistic and social values are things apart.

His open expression of revolutionary ideas‚ however‚ was not without its share of consequences. Although Faiz was imprisoned several times‚ he spent his life fighting for the cause of truth. He died on 20th November‚ 1984.
