Pakistan Telecommunication Authority directs cellular companies to slash night packages
Wednesday, November 21st, 2012 2:01:18 by Web DeskIn what appeared to be a blow for youngsters, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has directed the mobile companies to slash their night calling packages as these are proving to be a cause of social nuisance.
The authority cited views conveyed by some segments of the society as the reasons behind the fresh directive. According to them, the aforementioned calling packages or late night packages are diminishing the intelligence of youths, and causing misguidance and wastage of time.
Chairman PTA is of the view that these packages were causing social degeneration; that is why we have announced to deprive the consumers of this facility, adding that this facility had been announced for better communication but majority of people started using it negatively and unscrupulously.
Cell phone service providers offer myriad night call packages which offer extremely low rates for calls during extended hours of the night. These mobile packages are hampering our youth, our youth especially waste their precious time in calling their friends unnecessarily late night and due to these late night packages the routine life of our youth is disturbed badly.
While addressing a press conference in Islamabad, PTA Chairman Farooq Awan has directed all the mobile phone companies to end their night packages. He said that some people were complaining about ‘troubles’ created by this package; that is why we have decided to take it back.
He said that the package facility should be allowed to be used till 12 am. In this regard, all the mobile companies have been ordered to form a practicable formula for implementation on current orders.
It is vital to mention here that recently, Punjab Assembly had passed a resolution demanding imposition of ban on these calling packages for the same reasons described above.
Undoubtedly, these packages have become a source of pollution, which are detrimental to the future of youth, while there is a need for legislation to regulate usage of the new technology.
