Toxic cough syrup claims at least 16 lives in Lahore
Monday, November 26th, 2012 5:32:49 by Web DeskTragic news is not asymmetrical news in Pakistan. If any day Taliban bless on the nation and don’t kill anyone across the country, traffic mishap or target killing or other manmade incidents complete the counting.
In the latest incident, at least 16 people have died after drinking a toxic cough syrup in Lahore, the provincial metropolis of Lahore. The concerned authorities closed three pharmacies and a medicine factory while imposing a ban on cough syrup Tyno.
The deaths occurred in Shahdra Town neighborhood between Friday and Sunday with the victims mostly drug addicts who took the syrup to get high. The scandal comes after around 100 heart patients died in January in Lahore, after taking faulty medicine made locally.
According to the media reports, some of the victims were found dead in a graveyard where addicts used to take different kinds of drugs. Seven others died in hospital. Three pharmacies have been shut down and their owners arrested, the reports added.
The health adviser for Punjab province, Khawaja Salman Rafiq while speaking to a private TV channel said the syrup would be confiscated from all pharmacies. He said inspectors had shut down a drugs factory and sent samples to a laboratory for detailed analysis.
The provincial Health Department had earlier submitted an initial report to Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif regarding the cough syrup. He had ordered that the department look into the matter and submit a report within 72 hours. Following the orders, the authority raided 151 places and seized stock of the poisonous syrup.
The report states that none of the seized syrups were expired. The police had arrested the owner of a medical store from where the cough syrup was obtained.
A murder case was earlier registered against the pharmaceutical company and pharmacy owners as well. Cough syrup is often used for inebriation purposes and is sold as over-the-counter medicine at many pharmacies.

The hard and fast facts of the above mentioned drugs must be noted at this point:
1. All reports from the Drug testing laboratory (Govt. of Punjab) have come out clear for Tyno cough syrup. It has been proved that there was absolutely NOTHING wrong with the drug, and the Govt has publically admitted that on National Television
2. All the deceased are CONFIRMED drug addicts who have been using this regularly for years for a cheap ‘high’. It has been clearly mentioned by the EDO Health that the cough syrup has been taken in sync with other drugs by these drug addicts. It has been taken in overdose in conjunction with other substances, which still needs to be confirmed via post mortem reports.
3. Most importantly, latest reports (released on 26th November 2012) has proven that an illegal factory is operational in Shahdara town which has been producing fake syrups and using company’s bottles.
