Resolution against construction of Kalabagh Dam presents in Sindh Assembly
Thursday, December 6th, 2012 3:44:15 by Web DeskThe Sindh Assembly on Thursday adopted a condemnation resolution against construction of Kalabagh Dam and political leaders’ statements in its favor.
The resolution was tabled by PPP’s Imran Zafar Laghari when the house met with Speaker Nisar Khuhro in chair. MPA Sikandar Mendro said they condemned those who support Kalabagh dam. Later, a two-hour debate on the issue was allowed by the Speaker.
The resolution stated, “This house condemns the construction of controversial Kalabagh Dam and recommends the federal government to abandon this project once for all. This is a dead horse which could not become alive.”
“We vehemently condemn Lahore High Court’s decision to allow construction of Kalabagh Dam and supporting statement by Shahbaz Sharif. This project is against masses of Sindh and raising this issue at any forum by any quarter is nothing but creating disturbance. Therefore its construction is rejected, it added”
Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) MPA Nadir Magsi stood up to talk about the dam but met with anti-Kalabagh Dam sloganeering. Members of the assembly sought permission from the Speaker for presenting the resolution which was granted and then presented.
Pakistan Muslim League – Functional (PML-F) MPA Nusrat Sehar Abbasi, however, said that a simple resolution would not be enough, adding that the PPP needed to make clear its policy on the issue.
On Nov 29, the Lahore High Court ordered the federal government to implement decisions of the Council of Common Interests (CCI) and build the much-politicized Kalabagh Dam.
