Sven Nys is edging close to overcome Niels Albert at the UCI World Cup overall standings after his marvellous performances in the past couple months.
The cyclist is eyeing the UCI Cyclo Cross World Championships in Louisville and with his current legs, he is a definite contender to win the rainbow jersey.
His most recent win came on Sunday, December 2nd, 2012 when the Belgian manages to claim his first ever win at the renowned velodrome of Roubaix, France.
The cyclist completed the race in a total time of 1 hour, 3minutes and 7 seconds after a photo-finish.
Kevin Pauwels came almost took the victory away from Nys but a one second lead was enough to do the trick for Sven.
Niels Albert, Julien Taramarcaz and Lars van der Haar occupied the third, fourth and the fifth positions in the respective order.
The 36-year-old is now only 15 points Niels Albert after the Elite men World Cup rankings after the fourth round.
Albert has bagged a total number of 280 points and tops the category, while Nys holds the second spot with 265 points to his credit.
Kevin Pauwels is not far behind either with his 254 points whereas, Klaas Vantornout and Lars van der Haar secures the fourth and the fifth positions with 209 and 197 points respectively.
Nys has now started to believe that winning the rainbow jersey is pretty much possible and he is only inches away from it.
“Competing my last season wearing the rainbow would be something extraordinary, however we haven’t done it yet,” Nys toldĀ Het Nieuwsblad.
He further added, “Cipollini also won the championship at 35 years,” he explained. “I do not know how, but I feel I have not lost any of my explosiveness. It’s something I continue to work on”.
“Usually only on the last lap am I on the limit. In Tabor and Hamme-Zogge I had to give it everything. I feel that I am good in all conditions, on all types of surfaces. This winter they [my competitors] have never been comfortable riding with me,” he concluded.
Nys previously won the World Cyclo-Cross Championships back in 2004-05 and now has a great opportunity make it his second overall win at the biggest Cyclo-Cross even.
