Nick Compton lauds captain Alastair Cook

England opening batsman Nick Compton calls batting with Alastair Cook an amazing feeling, and said that the skipper helps him ‘chill out’ in the middle.

Both openers scored 165 runs for the first-wicket-stand in the third Test against India at Eden Gardens. Smashing his 23rd Test ton, Cook guided his team to a commanding position in the game.

England were 216 for the loss of just one wicket at the end of the day. Compton returned to the pavilion after playing a superb knock of 57 runs. Although he himself could not go for the big score, his partnership with Cook really set the platform.

“Standing up there today and looking at the board and the stats that Cook is the youngest to put 7000 runs. It was quite an amazing moment! I was batting with this guy, the all-time leading century-maker for England,” said Compton.

Compton also admired his captain’s batting strategy, saying that the left-hander has a clear head, and knows what he is actually doing. Terming him as a clever batsman, the opener said that Cook has a great temperament.

“I would say he’s very clear. He seems to know exactly what he’s doing and what he wants to do. For me, it’s easy to chill out there at the other end. It becomes a big difference when you have a player of Cook’s calibre,” he stated.

Being very unflappable is probably a good way to describe him (Cook). He’s tough. I’ve really enjoyed the time I spent out there. He’s quite an easy guy to get used to. He keeps things very simple. It’s just a good way to get to know someone by getting there in the middle. You can’t be closer to someone really in the heat of the battle. I really enjoyed that.”

Earlier on the second day, the home side got out after scoring 316 runs in the first innings. After Gautam Gambhir and Sachin Tendulkar’s first-day fight, Mahendra Singh Dhoni took the responsibility on his shoulders, and piled up crucial 52 runs. Compton was the only dismissal in England’s first innings. He was sent back to the dressing room by Pragyan Ojha.
