US Ambassador Richard Olson says talks possible with Haqqani Network
Thursday, December 13th, 2012 1:40:14 by Web DeskThe US Ambassador to Pakistan Richard Olson has said the principles the Afghan government had set up for the reconciliation policy can be applied to all militant groups including the Haqqani network.
In an interview to BBC Urdu, the US envoy said talks could be held with any individual acting against the state willing to adhere to the Afghan reconciliation policy. He was the US was ready to take action against Mullah Fazlullah if it received intelligence reports.
When asked about drone strikes in Pakistan, the US ambassador replied that the people of Pakistan and US were affected by extremism which was also a challenge for the entire world. He added that the US wanted to work together with Pakistan to tackle this challenge.
He noted, “We understand that Pakistan had to face similar challenges as America was bound to bear with the passage of time. The question remains, as to what grading, importance Pakistani citizen gives to this (pertinent) issue, as I or any other outsider cannot do so.”
He further stated, “Any group, member embarking on confrontation with state apparatus that agrees to implementation and support of Afghan reconciliation policy, would be welcome for dialogue.”
“We understand that Pakistan had to face similar challenges as America was bound to bear with the passage of time”, said US envoy. “ The question remains, as to what grading, importance Pakistani citizen gives to this (pertinent) issue, as I or any other outsider cannot do so”, he regretted.
