Duncan Fletcher under fire after India’s misery against England
Friday, December 14th, 2012 2:59:37 by Rana Nasir GhafoorFollowing India’s two consecutive defeats in the ongoing series, captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and senior players like Sachin Tendulkar and Zaheer Khan are under heavy criticism.
However, the critics have not forgotten to slam coach, Duncan Fletcher. Many former players have opened fire at the coach, demanding his axe. Since Fletcher has joined the side, a serious downfall in the team’s performance has been observed.
India not only lost the No. 1 Test status under his command, but also suffered defeat in 10 of the previous 16 matches. The Men in Blue also failed to qualify for the knock-out stage of the ICC T20 World Cup.
"I think he is a big failure. I think he should be sacked straight away," said Dilip Vengsarkar, who played 116 Tests & 129 ODIs for India.
Mohinder Amarnath also came heavily on the former Zimbabwean player, saying that only an Indian should be given the job to coach the side.
"There is a saying in India. If you are fair and white, you are fine. If you are dark, you are good for nothing. I personally don’t believe in foreign coaches," Amarnath stated.
Rahul Dravid also shared his thoughts on the issue, and explained: "I think his reputation is on the line as well. I think, knowing someone like him, he would want to get more involved and have a say in where his own career and his own reputation is headed."
On the other hand, Dhoni has put his weight behind Fletcher, saying that the coach should not be held responsible. He described that an individual cannot be blamed for the team’s poor show, because it depends on how the entire unit performs.
"We can’t put the blame on Duncan Fletcher. We should not really look into excuses and try not to play the blame game and put it on the coach. Ultimately what matters is how the 11 players perform in the middle," Dhoni stated.
On his coaching mantra, Fletcher had said: "I am a great believer that in coaching you offer advice and don’t be dictatorial in your approach. I have just come in there will be no changes as far as I am concerned."
