Arsenal’s boss, Arsene Wenger, hailed the Barcelona ace, Lionel Messi, after he broke Gerd Muller’s record for highest number of goals scores in a calendar year.
The Argentinean star fired his 85th and 86th goal of the year last weekend in Barcelona’s 2-1 victory against Real Betis. As a result, he became the highest goal scorer in calendar year, surpassing the record set by Muller in 1972.
With this achievement, the Frenchman was full of praises for Messi and admitted that he never thought anyone could break this record.
Wenger was quoted in an interview to the Arsenal Player:
“With the biggest imagination, I would not have thought somebody would be capable to do that. Congratulations to Messi. He is just mesmerising. What he is doing is unbelievable.”
The 63-year-old also told Arsenal Player that scoring a single goal for the match is very difficult but you can expect 10 goals coming from the Barcelona star every month. He commented further, “It looks so easy to score, and we are all tempted to say ‘Let’s walk on this pitch and score goals’, because it looks so easy when he does it. When you have played football, you know how difficult it is to score one goal. To think that one player can score 86 per year, if you think you play nine and a half months, it’s nearly 10 goals guaranteed per month. When you start the month, you know this boy will give you 10 goals. It’s not bad!”
Wenger is currently leading his side which is standing at number seven at the Barclays English Premier League. Arsenal recently ended their losing streak after defeating West Bromwich by 2-0. However, in the mid-week game against Bradford City, the Gunners suffered a shocking Capital One Cup exit.
