Gabriel Medina defeats Glenn Hall to claim the ASP PRIME Nike Lowers Pro Title

Brazil’s Gabriel Medina took out the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) PRIME Nike Lowers Pro Title by defeating Ireland’s Glenn Hall in the Final that went down at Lower Trestles in San Clemente, California, on Saturday, May 5.

“This is a very special win and it has been a long week,” Medina said. “I’m going to Brazil now with more confidence and this has been great.”

The 18-year-old sensation has been making waves in major surfing competitions for the past few months. He continued his excellent run of form at the latest PRIME event, where he found himself taking on some of the most talented surfers from around the globe.

The Nike Lowers Pro Title went to Brazil last year after a superb performance by Miguel Pupo. Determined to keep the title home, Medina put on a superb show during the course of the event to gradually make his way through into the Final.

The Final of the latest ASP PRIME event saw Medina and Hall take each other on in glassy two-to-four foot waves that were gracing the event site on the final day of the competition.

As the Final got underway, Medina went through a series of ordinary scores before locking his first business-wave to post a 7.17 on the score-board. He kept the momentum going to add an additional 8.50 points to his account, which took him to a heat-total of 15.67 points.

Hall did not have much luck with the waves even though the surfing conditions were not as testing as he made them look. He only managed to score a 5.10 off his first business-wave and immediately backed it up with a 5.77-point ride to finish with a heat-total of 10.87 points. The 4.80-point deficit forced him to concede an easy victory to his rival.

The young Brazilian had an excellent run at Lower Trestles and could pretty much be summed up as sheer dominance.

“I love Trestles so much,” Medina said. “It’s just such a good wave and it’s one of my favourites, I just don’t even have words to explain how I’m feeling right now. I’m stoked.”

With the ASP PRIME Nike Lowers Pro wrapped up, Medina and his fellow ASP World Tour contenders head to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for the third stop, Billabong Rio Pro.
