Pakistan attack: Khyber Agency blast kills 15 people
Monday, December 17th, 2012 12:30:57 by Web DeskAt least 15 people were killed and over 40 others injured when a powerful car bomb went off in a crowded market in the restive Khyber tribal region of northwest Pakistan on Monday. The explosives-laden car was parked at Fauji Market in Jamrud area of Khyber Agency.
According to initial reports, the blast took place in the Tehsil Jamrud of Khyber tribal area. The injured included women and children. Reports said it was so powerful explosion that nearby shops and vehicles caught fire as a result of which more than ten cars were completely destroyed.
All injured were shifted to the Hayat medical complex where the condition of several injured was reported as critical. Security forces reached the site of attack and cordoned off the area as investigations into the incident went underway.
Details regarding the nature and intensity of bomb were not available till the filing of this report. Some reports claims that the explosives were planted in a vehicle parked near the market area.
Khyber Agency is one of seven districts in Pakistan’s semi-autonomous tribal belt, where Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked fighters have carved out strongholds used to plot attacks on Pakistani, Afghan and Western targets.
No group claimed responsibility for the attack. Several militant groups, including the Pakistani Taliban and Lashkar-e-Islam, are active in Khyber Agency.
