Supreme Court takes suo motu notice of recent appointment by PM Ashraf
Monday, December 17th, 2012 4:06:26 by Web DeskThe Supreme Court of Pakistan has taken notice of appointment of Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf’s son in law in World Bank.
A three member on Monday headed by Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali will conduct hearing of the case on December 19.The suo motu was taken on Monday on the news that the said person has been appointed as Executive Director in the international monetary organization.
Earlier, it was reported that the prime minister had appointed his son-in-law Raja Azeemul Haq to the prestigious post of Executive Director (ED) of the World Bank in Washington.
In order to ensure transparency, there should have been a selection board and a panel of names should have been moved to the premier but this procedure was not followed and this appointment was bulldozed.
Press Secretary to the Prime Minister, Shafqit Jalil while speaking to the media said that PM Ashraf approved the summary for appointing Raja Azeem as the executive director of the World Bank, adding that there was nothing unusual about the move.
The decision was reportedly taken despite resistance shown by Finance Minister Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh, who tried to convince the premier to change his decision.
Reports also said that Economic Affairs Division (EAD), the department which was asked to formally move the summary by the prime minister’s Principal Secretary Ayub Qazi, also opposed the move. It suggested that a head-hunting committee or selection board should be formulated under the Establishment Division to select a suitable candidate.
The post of ED is considered crucial as he represents seven countries in the World Bank’s executive board where multibillion dollar projects are approved annually. Pakistan’s nominated ED represents Afghanistan, Iran, Algeria, Morocco, Ghana, Tunisia and Pakistan.
The post of executive director and alternate ED rotates between Pakistan and Algeria every two years and recently Algeria’s ED was elected for the next two years and their ED had assumed charge on November 1, 2012.
