CIA report says Israel spied Pakistan nuclear programme
Wednesday, December 19th, 2012 7:49:18 by Web DeskThe Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) released a classified document last week, giving details about Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard, an American citizen, who was appointed to gather information about Pakistan’s nuclear program.
The CIA had prepared the report, titled “The Jonathan Jay Pollard Espionage Case: A Damage Assessment”, on October 30, 1987, Dawn, reports.
Pollard was sentenced to life in 1987 for spying as he worked for US Navy’s intelligence service. He passed many US documents to Israel about Pakistan’s Kahuta nuclear plant in 1984 and 1985.
The declassification of the document came after an appeal by the George Washington University’s National Security Archive project, a non-profit organization working to reduce secrecy in the US government.
The CIA document showed that Pollard focused on “Arab (and Pakistani) nuclear intelligence; Arab exotic weaponry, including chemical weapons; Soviet aircraft; Soviet air defenses; Soviet air-to-air missiles and air-to-surface missiles; and Arab order-of-battle, deployments, readiness”.
Under the title “Implications of Compromises — What Israel Gained from Pollard’s Espionage”, the report says that “Mr Pollard’s stolen material, from the Israeli perspective, provided significant benefits [redacted] …. Page 59, [redacted] Pollard’s deliveries concerning PLO headquarters near Tunis, Tunisian and Libyan air defenses, and Pakistan’s plutonium reprocessing facility near Islamabad”.
There are 10 references to Pakistan and its nuclear sites in the report but the archive’s website have removed the details from the copy posted on it.
