National Assembly approves Fair Trail Bill 2012
Thursday, December 20th, 2012 4:37:42 by Web DeskDespite opposition from various parties, the government on Thursday tabled Fair Trail Bill in the National Assembly.
The bill which was tabled by Law Minister Farooq Naek was approved after amendments proposed by the PML-N and MQM were incorporated.
Speaking on the floor of the National Assembly, Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf said the main purpose of the bill was to eliminate terrorism from the country. “The bill will be useful to send a message to terrorists that the country was united against them”, he added.
The prime minister added that the bill was an indication that Pakistan was supportive of its security forces. “The bill will protect the ordinary citizen from terrorists,” he stated.
Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan opposed the bill saying that the adoption of the bill would insecure the public. He further said that the government had not provided them a copy of the bill when they sought.
Khan said that the current bill was not acceptable to the PML-N and added that a conclusive debate was needed before tabling it.
Moreover, the MQM leaders also opposed the bill before it was tabled saying the bill could harm the basic rights of the people. But later, when the house started approving the bill clause by clause, the MQM leaders showed no confrontation.
The legislation in question provides the authority to the government that it can access data, information or material in any documented form … through audio visual device, CCTV, still photography, bugging, observation or any mode of modern devices or techniques obtained under the Act … documents, papers, pamphlets, booklets for surveillance.
The government can also intercept emails, SMS, internet protocol detail record, call detail record and any form of computer based or cell phone based communication. It also includes any means of communication using wired/ wireless/ internet protocol-based media/ gadgetry.
