Eoin Morgan terms failure to capitalise on good start as main reason behind T20 loss to India
Friday, December 21st, 2012 3:22:43 by Rana Nasir GhafoorEngland Twenty20 captain Eoin Morgan, who is shouldering the responsibility in absence of Stuart Broad, has said that his team failed to capitalise on the good start, and fell 10-15 runs short in the opening T20 international against India in Pune.
After suffering 2-1 drubbing in the Test series, the Men in Blue redeemed some respect by beating England by five wickets in the opening T20 encounter on Thursday. Batting first, the tourists lost the first wicket very quickly, as Michael Lumb went back
to the pavilion after scoring just one run.
Alex Hales and Luke Wright consolidated the innings, and took the score to 89, before the latter was dismissed by Yuvraj Singh. Hales scored a magnificent half-century, before Jos Butler played an unbeaten knock of 33 runs later in the innings. With the
help of a combined effort, the visiting side reached 157 runs at the end of 20 overs
In reply, India achieved it with 13 balls to spare. Yuvraj, who earlier claimed three wickets, guided the side to victory by scoring 38 runs. The target eventually proved to be easy for the home side.
Expressing disappointment over the loss, Morgan stated: “We got off to a fantastic start — Alex (Hales) and Luke (Wright) really came together as a pair — but from there we didn’t really kick on. We lost wickets continuously which halted our momentum
and didn’t do us any favours. The total we did creep up to was probably about 10 or 15 short of par."
He continued: "We said at the halfway stage we would have to do things exceptionally well to win this game, because the wicket did play so well, and we just lacked a bit of discipline really."
"Losing wickets in Twenty20 cricket doesn’t help — and batting first, you never know how much is enough because you play on a small ground on a good wicket. We didn’t compensate for the wickets and again didn’t set it up for the finish. We lost wickets
at the wrong times,"
The second and final T20 between the two sides is scheduled to be played in Mumbai on Saturday, December 22nd.
