PPP can kill polls delay rumours

Thursday, December 27th, 2012 12:49:06 by

Time is ripe for the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) to come up with a clear stance to kill the fast growing rumours about the upcoming elections. The PPP government will complete its five-year term on March 17 and new elections should be held in two months after the assemblies’ dissolution.

Federal Minister Syed Khurshid Shah said Thursday that the PPP wants elections on time but efforts are being made to postpone the elections. He did not say as to why are hatching the conspiracies. Some other PPP leaders have also issued similar statements, increasing doubts about the polls.

If the PPP leaders foresee a plot to harm the democratic process then what stopped them to adopt a clear policy and to expose those elements who are bent upon creating hurdles for democratic system.

It is highly unfortunate that political bitterness has done a huge damage to the country and if all political leaders did not realize sensitive of the current state of affairs then anti-democratic elements can take advantage of the situation.

It is also the responsibility of the Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) to set aside political acrimony for the sake of the system and the country as any misadventure will also badly hit it. Other parties in and outside the parliament will have to play their role to frustrate any attempt to derail the democratic system.

Political disputes in the past paved the way for dictatorship and Pakistan can no more afford military rule as the previous coups have done a lot of damage to the country. Military dictators are fully responsible for the current mess, who snatched freedom of the people just for their lust for power.

A caretaker government is likely to be installed in mid-March to hold elections in May but it seems there is so far no agreement between the PPP and PML-N on the caretaker set-up. Reports suggest that both the major parties have not yet reached on the name for the caretaker Prime Minister.

Leader of the opposition Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has floated some conditions for understanding on the caretaker government. He demanded removal of all governors before the caretaker set up to be put in place. The government is unlikely to accept these conditions, that will cause rift between the two parties whose understanding is important for smooth election process.

Some PPP leaders have privately shown concerns about the efforts to extend the term of the would-be caretaker government. They also do not rule out an attempt by some people to move the Supreme Court to extend term of the caretaker set up for at least one year.

Pakistan is lucky to have an independent judiciary and the top judges have on a number of occasions reiterated support for democracy, constitution and rule of law. Conspirators are likely to  face humiliation to disrupt the democratic system.

Statements from the Chief Election Commissioner, Fakhr-ud-Din G Ibrahim, is strong supporter of holding polls on time and he said the same on Thursday. He said that the current assemblies will be dissolved on March 18 and that elections will be held in constitutional period.
