Monday, December 31st, 2012 12:08:12 by Web DeskDeputy Speaker Matiullah Agha was elected unopposed as the speaker of the Balochistan Assembly on Monday.
Balochistan National Party (Awami) MPA Dr Fouzia Marri administered the oath, after which Agha pledged that he will fulfill all his duties with sincerity.
The slot of speaker had fallen vacant on December 26 with the ousting of Aslam Bhootani through a unanimous no-trust resolution.
Today’s session of the Balochistan Assembly began under the chairmanship of Dr Marri during which Agha had submitted his nomination papers for the position of assembly speaker. Reports said that Marri is likely to become the deputy speaker.
Earlier on Sunday, parliamentary parties in the Balochistan coalition government had agreed to elect Agha as the new speaker of the provincial assembly.
According to the media reports, a meeting of the coalition partners was held with Chief Minister Nawab Aslam Raisani in the chair which decided to unanimously nominate and elect Agha for the post of speaker.
All the coalition partners agreed to support the nominated candidates for the slots of speaker and deputy speaker.
Parliamentary leaders of different parties, including Maulana Abdul Wasay of JUI-F, Syed Ahsan Shah of BNP-Awami, Engineer Zamrok Khan of ANP, deputy parliamentary leader of PPP Ali Madad Jattak and other legislators attended the meeting and expressed complete trust in the leadership of Nawab Raisani.
They said that despite a number of hurdles the incumbent provincial government is completing its constitutional tenure and has carried out “matchless development” in the province.
It is vital to mention here that Bhootani has challenged his removal from the post in the Balochistan High Court, which will also hear the case on Monday.
