Top two seeds, David Ferrer and Richard Gasquet, stole the show and advanced into the round of 16 at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open 2013, an ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 Series event taking place in Doha, Qatar.
The world number five, Ferrer made a drastic entry at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex. He lost his serve towards the end of the first set and eventually lost it. However, the Spaniard picked his game after that and recorded a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 victory against the German challenger, Dustin Brown. He broke his rival’s serve four times after gifting away the opening set and ultimately pocketed the match in almost two and half hours.
“In the first set it was 5-all. I didn’t serve so good, and he played better than me,” admitted the Spaniard in an on-court interview after notching this victory. “I tried to fight every point and finally I won.”
Next in line for Ferrer is another German qualifier, Tobias Kamke, who trashed Spain’s Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo with a breadstick to set up this meeting.
Ranked 10th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Gasquet eased past the Czech qualifier, Jan Hernych, in straight sets to accompany the Spanish number two. He penned down a 6-3, 6-4 victory in one hour and 15 minutes against the world number 193 to progress at this event.
The French number two beamed after recording this victory, “Happy to win the first match of the year. It’s never easy, always tense. I didn’t play in a tournament for two months. The first five games were difficult for me.”
He lost his serve once but converted three out of four break chances to his advantage. Gasquet will face off the Slovenian star, Grega Zemlja, who rallied past Italy’s Fabio Fognini in three sets to set up this clash.
