JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman terms Tahirul Qadri’s philosophy illogical

Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Wednesday termed Minhajul Quran International’s (MQI) leader Tahirul Qadri’s philosophy of riasat bachao, siasat nahin’ (Save the state, not politics) as illogical.

Speaking to the media in Quetta, the JUI-F chief said that such tactics were only used to derail democracy. He said, “The overall situation in the country – of security and economy – has been orchestrated in a way that now people feel the need for a revolution. It is being done deliberately in order to justify overthrowing the democratic setup in the country.”

He said that martial laws in the past were imposed under the garb of ‘saving the state’. He noted “When [former Army chief] Ziaul Haq came into power, he sloganeered ‘pehle ehtisab, phir intikhab’ (First accountability, then elections), however that never actually happened,” he added.

The JUI-F chief further quoted a hadith and said that whoever keeps promising everything is actually a liar. In his view, someone, who in the past had left the country being disappointed over his failure in politics, should not try coming back to it.

Fazlur Rehman said the purpose of criticising politicians was to derail the democratic system. “I believe that fear is being spread in the country to find an excuse for delaying the general election.”

The JUI-F chief warned that any extra-constitutional step could lead to anarchy. He praised Awami National Party chief Asfandyar Wali Khan’s offer of peace talks with the Pakistani Taliban and said the time had come to implement a joint resolution of parliament passed in October 2008.

About long march call by Tahir-ul-Qadri, he replied in lighter mood that Allama was doing politics in the pretext of Riasat (State). Qadri has raised the slogan that “Save state and not politics”, but he is dong politics under this slogan, he added.

It is vital to mention here that Qadri, who returned to Pakistan after a five-year-stay in Britain, has set a three-week deadline for the Pakistan Peoples’ Party-led government for electoral reforms, or face a “million-man march” on January 14. The deadline was announced in a huge rally arranged in Lahore on December 23.
