Pakistan army views internal threats as biggest danger to security

The Pakistan army has, after its 11 years of war on terror, changed its operational priorities for the first time and has described internal threats as the biggest danger to the country’s security.

In its new ‘army doctrine’ the military has termed as the biggest threat for the country’s security the on-going guerrilla war in the tribal regions and along its western borders and bomb attacks from some groups on the security institutions and in cities.

The army publishes the doctrine to review its war preparations and capabilities and to keep them in right direction.

A new chapter titled ‘Sub-Conventional and Warfare’ has been included in the green book for the first time. Without mentioning certain characters in the war, the book talked about some groups and elements. The book also mentioned cross-the-border attacks along the Western borders.

The over 200-page green book is being distributed among military commanders and the military sources said that it would also be shared with the public and will also be posted on the army’s website at an appropriate time.

The doctrine says that some groups and elements are engaged in terrorist activities in the tribal regions and urban areas to harm existence of Pakistan. These attacks are carried out in a well-organized and highly brutal way, which need similar preparations and response.

Proxy war has also been discussed in the chapter of non-conventional warfare, which is one of the elements of violence in some areas. However, no country has been mentioned.

Defence analysts say that the current situation along the Western borders has prompted a change in the army’s priorities.

Talat Masood says that it is the first time that India had been number-one enemy of Pakistan before the publication of the new doctrine. He said Pakistan’s all preparations and weapons were meant for India. He said that the Pakistan army has for the first time admitted that the real threat is emanating internally and along the western borders.

He was of the opinion that the Pakistan army will now focus on the non-conventional warfare and Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan and its allies across the border.

Army officials who had been involved in preparations of the doctrine say that the army is ready to deal with the new emerging threat and to seek political support for this purpose.
