Malala Yousafzai discharges from Birmingham Hospital
Friday, January 4th, 2013 2:53:56 by Web DeskMalala Yousafzai, who was shot in the head by the Taliban, has been discharged from a Birmingham hospital as an inpatient.
The 15-year-old education campaigner was being treated at Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEHB) after being transferred following the attack in October 2011.
She will continue her rehabilitation at her family’s temporary home in the West Midlands. Malala will have cranial reconstruction surgery in late January or early February, the hospital’s trust said.
Doctors said the bullet grazed the teenager’s brain when it struck her just above her left eye in the incident in the Swat Valley.
Dr Rosser, of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, said: “A number of QEHB’s multi-specialist doctors have been working alongside colleagues from Birmingham Children’s Hospital to treat her. He noted, “The medical team has included clinicians from neurosurgery, imaging, trauma and therapies.”
Malala first rose to prominence aged just 11 with a blog for the BBC Urdu service in 2009 in which she described life in Swat during the bloody rule of the Taliban.
Her calls for improved education for girls attracted the attention of the Taliban, ultimately leading to the attempt on her life. The Taliban claimed that they shot Malala for promoting secularism.
