Top two seeds reach semi-finals at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open 2013 – Tennis News

World number five David Ferrer and the French number two, Richard Gasquet, breezed past their respective opponents to book a place in the semi-finals at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open 2013 on Thursday.

Seeded top at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 series event, Ferrer required almost an hour to crush Italy’s Paolo Lorenzi with a bagel.

“Maybe yesterday was similar to tonight, and I played good,” said the Spanish veteran in a courtside interview after bagging the match. “In the second set, I played more aggressive with my game. It’s never easy to play [well] the first week of the season.”

The highest ranked player of this tournament, Ferrer was never threatened with any barrier. He cashed four out of seven break chances to formulate a 6-3, 6-0 score line.

Ferrer will square off against the former world number three, Nikolay Davydenko from Russia, in the final eight. The Russian veteran crushed Italy’s Simone Bolelli with double breadsticks in the quarter-finals.

Ranked 10^th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Gasquet dismissed the Slovakian contender, Lukas Lacko, with a breadstick to progress at this event.

“I returned better and served better than yesterday. It’s a good match for me,” said the beaming Gasquet after notching this victory. “I’m happy. I feel more confident than yesterday. It’s a good win for me.”

The French star needed one hour and 11 minutes to topple his opponent. He was broken once but converted five out of 10 break opportunities to his advantage, eventually recording a 6-1, 6-3 victory. Gasquet fired eight aces and dominated throughout the battle.

The second seed will next face the German qualifier, Daniel Brands, who crushed France’s Gael Monfils with a breadstick to set up this meeting.
