Feeling the heat from the long march announced by Tahirul Qadri, Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf has contacted the leadership of major coalition partners and opposition parties and assured them of the government’s resolve to protect the democratic process against all odds.

Ashraf phoned Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif and Awami National Party (ANP) President Asfandyar Wali Khan to assure them that no one would be allowed to derail the democratic process in the country. He also held meeting with PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and Deputy PM Pervez Elahi, seeking their support to help reinforce the democratic order in the country.

The premier and Nawaz Sharif agreed that democracy was the way forward and people would not let anyone derail it. Nawaz said Pakistan had lived with the horrors of the so-called slogans of revolutions and long marches and the best way to ascertain the people’s wishes was through ballot.

The prime minister said restoration of democracy owed itself to the arduous struggle of political forces. He said the system needed continuity to evolve adding that it was a sign of political maturity that all political forces were on the same page for the continuity of democratic system.

Ashraf said the government was committed to holding fair, free and transparent elections as per the law and the Constitution.

In the meantime, the ANP chief assured the prime minister of his party’s full support for the continuation of democratic process. “Our goal is to establish a sustainable democracy in the country and any attempt to create hurdles in the democratic process will be unacceptable,” he added.

Responding to his remarks, the premier said the government considered elections as a national trust and was committed to holding them according to the Constitution and law.

In the meantime, PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and Deputy Prime Minister Chaudhry Pervez Elahi called on Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf at the Prime Minister’s House and discussed with him the country’s current political situation.

The two leaders assured the prime minister of their unflinching support for the continuation of the PPP-led coalition government. Ashraf said a consensus among the political forces across the party divide on the need for continuity of democratic process augured well for the country’s stability.

He said continuity of democratic process was vital, as it incorporated interests and aspirations of various stakeholders. He said the country was looking forward to general elections and the government would ensure that they were fair, free and transparent.

It is excellent to find internal threats within us, which were started to grow after the birth of Pakistan, a special section of people in minority, started to take revenge by inserting their people in all types of bureaucracy and at high level controlling positions, by hidden agenda started their work with polite and strategic silence. They are within us in politicians, in services and are hidden in all society, in cities and working with best coordination. The top positions are with them. Most people know them but can’ t speak. Their heads live in other countries and after completion of serving in Pakistan, mostly migrate there to safe their faces and are buried at the bank of a River.
